Blockchains Must Be Ready for Surging Demands

According to Stripe co-CEOs Patrick and John Collison, existing blockchain networks need to be prepared for a sharp increase in load in the near future. They predict that the development and mass adoption of AI agents will lead to the need to process up to 1 billion transactions per second.

Today, most blockchains are not capable of processing even tens or hundreds of thousands of transactions per second. But with the proliferation of AI assistants that will actively interact with each other and make micropayments, the load on the networks will increase many times over.

Patrick Collison notes that the current performance of blockchains is not enough even to serve the immediate needs of payments and money transfers. Therefore, to support the future AI ecosystem, either the scalability of blockchains will need to be significantly improved, or new architectures capable of processing billions of transactions per second will need to be developed.

Conclusion

The rapid development of AI technologies and widespread robotization will lead to an explosive growth in the number of micropayments and transactions between intelligent agents. If blockchains cannot provide the necessary throughput, this could become a serious obstacle to the widespread adoption of AI in everyday life. Solving this problem will become a key task for cryptocurrency and blockchain developers in the coming years.
