Brazil Shelves Crypto Tax Plans

The authorities in Brazil, one of the largest economies in Latin America, have decided to postpone the introduction of a tax on cryptocurrency transactions. This is due to the upcoming presidential election in the country, which will be held in October 2026.

The current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, intends to run for a second term, so the government has preferred to wait with new tax initiatives in order not to cause discontent among voters. The cryptocurrency industry, which is actively developing in Brazil, is ambivalent about the possible introduction of a crypto tax, fearing a decrease in user interest in digital assets.

The introduction of a crypto tax could have become an additional source of revenue for the Brazilian budget, but at this stage, the authorities have concluded that the political risks outweigh the potential financial benefits. Most likely, the issue of crypto taxation in Brazil will be reconsidered after the 2026 presidential election.
