Increasing tax reporting complexity for the US crypto market
One of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges, Coinbase, has warned about the problems that participants in the cryptocurrency market will face due to new tax rules in the United States.
According to Coinbase experts, the Form 1099-DA introduced by the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for reporting income from digital asset transactions will lead to over-reporting and confusion. The new rules, in their opinion, will significantly complicate an already laborious process of filing tax returns for cryptocurrency holders.
In particular, Form 1099-DA requires reporting all cryptocurrency transactions, including purchases, sales, and transfers between wallets. This can lead to the total transaction amount being many times higher than the investor's actual income from cryptocurrency trading.
Coinbase representatives emphasize that such excessive reporting requirements will create an additional burden for both taxpayers and tax authorities. This may lead to a lot of questions and misunderstandings during audits and make the tax payment process more difficult.
The need to simplify cryptocurrency tax accounting
Crypto industry experts have long been calling for regulators to adopt a more flexible and balanced approach to the taxation of digital assets. In their opinion, the current rules do not take into account the specifics of the crypto market and create serious difficulties for its participants.
The introduction of Form 1099-DA is another step in this direction, but, judging by Coinbase's reaction, it does not yet solve the main problems. Tax authorities should continue to work on simplifying the accounting and reporting for cryptocurrency owners, in order to make this process more understandable and convenient.
