European Parliament endorses digital euro

The European Parliament has voted to support the European Central Bank's (ECB) plans to develop a digital euro. This decision is seen as an important step in strengthening the European Union's monetary sovereignty amid the growing influence of cryptocurrencies and other digital assets.

The digital euro is expected to complement, not replace, cash. This will allow EU citizens to use secure and efficient electronic payments without resorting to private cryptocurrencies. Additionally, a digital euro could help the ECB respond more quickly to economic changes and conduct monetary policy.

At the same time, European Parliament members stressed that the ECB must maintain its independence in the process of developing and implementing the digital euro. They also called for a thorough assessment of possible risks and implications for privacy and financial stability.

Overall, the European Parliament's approval paves the way for further advancement of the digital euro project. This could be an important step towards a more integrated and independent financial system of the European Union.
