South Korean police lost $1.4M in Bitcoin

According to a Cointelegraph report, two suspects have been arrested in South Korea after the theft of $1.4 million in Bitcoin from a police safe. The police had seized these crypto assets as part of a criminal investigation in 2021, but instead of storing them in their own crypto wallet, they placed them in a third-party controlled wallet platform.

Unfortunately, after four years, the police discovered that the crypto assets had been stolen by unknown individuals who had gained unauthorized access to this wallet. The investigation revealed that the two suspects, a man and a woman, had somehow gained access to the wallet and stolen the Bitcoins.

This incident demonstrates the importance of proper crypto asset management, especially when it comes to funds held by government agencies. Storing cryptocurrencies on third-party platforms always carries the risk of hacking and theft, so experts recommend using your own cold crypto wallets for secure storage of digital assets.

Additionally, this case shows that even professional government agencies can face challenges when dealing with cryptocurrencies. This further underscores the need to develop competencies in this area among all market participants - from ordinary users to law enforcement agencies.
