Centralized yield stablecoins and 'true DeFi'

Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, has criticized so-called yield-bearing stablecoins, which he believes do not fully align with the principles of decentralized finance (DeFi).

In his remarks, Buterin drew a clear distinction between 'true DeFi', focused on decentralizing risks, and centralized yield stablecoins, which he said more resemble traditional financial products.

Buterin noted that stablecoin models oriented around earning yields often involve a central authority managing reserves and making decisions about profit distribution. This, he said, contradicts key DeFi principles such as the absence of a single point of control and equal participation of users.

Alternative stablecoin models

As an alternative, Buterin proposed considering stablecoins built on mechanisms that directly link their value to fluctuations in underlying assets. Such models, he believes, better align with DeFi principles, as they distribute risks among network participants rather than concentrating them in the hands of a centralized authority.

Another suggestion from Buterin is stablecoins pegged to a basket of assets that includes not only traditional financial instruments, but also crypto assets. This, he said, could help balance risks and ensure more stable stablecoin value.

Expert opinion

Vitalik Buterin's criticism of yield-bearing stablecoins is well-founded. Indeed, many of them, despite their declared commitment to DeFi principles, in reality more resemble traditional banking products with centralized management.

The alternative stablecoin models proposed by Buterin, focused on risk distribution and the absence of a single control center, seem promising from the perspective of 'true DeFi' development. Their implementation could become an important step towards creating a more transparent, resilient, and decentralized digital asset ecosystem.
