Returning to Ethereum's base layer
In a much-anticipated blog post, Vitalik Buterin offered a fresh perspective on scaling the world's largest smart contract platform. After several years in which the ecosystem's main focus was on L2 solutions such as rollups, Buterin has returned to the idea of improving Ethereum's base protocol.
Key elements of Buterin's new plan:
- Implementing multi-sender transactions, which will allow bundling multiple transfers into a single transaction and reducing fees
- Developing new sharding techniques that can significantly increase the network's throughput
- Exploring the potential of optimistic and zk-rollups for scaling L1
According to Buterin, these and other proposals will help significantly improve the efficiency of Ethereum's base layer without compromising security and decentralization.
