Bhutan sells bitcoin as price drops

The Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan continues to reduce its bitcoin reserves, withdrawing large volumes of cryptocurrency from the market. According to the data, on Monday Bhutan sold another 175 BTC, continuing the sell-off that began more than a year ago.

Bhutan's peak investment in bitcoin was in early 2025, when the country owned around 13,000 BTC. But over the past year, the volume of reserves has more than halved, falling to less than 5,400 BTC. The total amount of bitcoin sold in 2026 was $42.5 million.

Such a sharp decline in Bhutan's bitcoin reserves is due to a significant drop in the price of the first cryptocurrency. Since the beginning of 2025, the value of bitcoin has fallen by 58%, forcing the state to sell off its assets to offset the losses.

Experts note that Bhutan seems to have decided to lock in its profits by getting rid of some of its crypto assets. But the reduction in bitcoin reserves could have a negative impact on the kingdom's economy in the long run if the cryptocurrency's price recovers.
