Tightening of Crypto Regulation in Canada

Canada's Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre (FINTRAC) continues to tighten control over the country's cryptocurrency market. In recent months, the regulator has revoked the registration of as many as 23 companies providing virtual asset exchange and transfer services. This is an unprecedented number of license revocations in a short period, indicating a significant acceleration in the pace of audits in this segment.

According to FINTRAC's report, most of the revoked licenses belonged to companies engaged in money transfers and cryptocurrency exchange. The regulator stated that these organizations did not meet the established requirements for anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing.

The tightening of crypto industry regulation in Canada is in line with global trends. Many countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union, have significantly increased control over the circulation of virtual assets in recent years. This is due to the risks posed by the unregulated cryptocurrency market - from financial fraud to use for illicit purposes.

Experts believe that FINTRAC's actions are part of an overall strategy to increase transparency and accountability in Canada's crypto industry. The revocation of licenses from unreliable players should contribute to the cleansing of the market and the strengthening of investors' and consumers' trust in legitimate crypto companies.
