Focusing on Ethereum mainnet

The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) developers have announced that they are canceling the planned launch of the Namechain Layer 2 solution. Namechain was supposed to support the release of ENSv2 - an updated version of the popular blockchain-based domain name service.

Instead, the ENS Labs team will fully focus on integrating ENSv2 directly into the Ethereum mainnet. Thus, the new version of ENS will operate directly on top of the main blockchain, without the use of additional scaling solutions.

This decision may be related to the fact that Layer 2 networks, despite promises of higher throughput and lower fees, still face compatibility and interoperability issues with the Ethereum mainchain. Abandoning Namechain will allow ENS to focus on seamless integration of ENSv2 into the core Ethereum ecosystem without additional risks and technical complexities.

New capabilities of ENSv2

The ENSv2 update is expected to bring a number of improvements, including more flexible domain management settings, integration with other Web3 protocols, and expanded functionality. ENSv2 is expected to play an important role in the development of decentralized domain names and improve the usability of Web3 applications for a wider audience.

The decision of the ENS Labs team to fully focus on the Ethereum mainnet may be perceived positively by the cryptocurrency community. This demonstrates the team's commitment to reliability and stability, a rejection of risky Layer 2 experiments in favor of the proven main blockchain. In the long run, this may contribute to wider adoption of ENS and strengthen its position as the leading platform for domain names in Web3.
