Conflict of Interest or Opportunity for Dialogue?
Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Paul Atkins has agreed to become a keynote speaker at an event organized by the cryptocurrency company Unicoin. This raises questions, as the SEC is currently actively fighting Unicoin, accusing it of violating rules and misleading investors.
According to the CEO of Unicoin, his company, on the contrary, believes that the SEC is misleading investors and the public about cryptocurrencies. He claims that Atkins was misinformed by his subordinates and therefore makes wrong decisions regarding the industry.
Such cooperation between the head of the SEC and the company opposing it does indeed look like a serious conflict of interest. However, on the other hand, it could be an opportunity for an open dialogue between the regulator and representatives of the crypto industry - something that has been sorely lacking lately. After all, it is constructive exchange of opinions and the search for compromises that can help develop balanced rules for the rapidly evolving digital assets space.
