Ethereum Foundation prepares for quantum threat

In January of this year, the Ethereum Foundation officially made post-quantum security a strategic priority and created a dedicated team to work on this issue. This step indicates the growing concern of the cryptocurrency community about the potential risks associated with the development of quantum computing.

Quantum computers, with their ability to crack modern cryptographic algorithms, pose a serious threat to the blockchain and cryptocurrency ecosystem. The Ethereum Foundation, as one of the leading projects in this area, understands the need to prepare for these challenges.

To address this problem, the Ethereum Foundation will focus on two areas:

  • leanVM — a lightweight virtual machine that reduces the computational load on network nodes and makes them more resistant to quantum attacks;
  • Post-quantum signatures — new cryptographic algorithms that are resistant to quantum computer attacks.

These initiatives are aimed at enhancing the security of Ethereum and ensuring its long-term viability in the face of the development of quantum computing.

The steps taken by the Ethereum Foundation demonstrate the importance of constant adaptation of cryptocurrency projects to new technological challenges. Resistance to quantum attacks will become a critically important characteristic of blockchain platforms in the near future.
