Google revisits the role of HTML sitemaps

Google has once again addressed a topic many SEO specialists consider outdated: HTML sitemaps. In practice, XML sitemaps have largely replaced them, since search engines read XML directly. Yet Google confirmed that the HTML version can still deliver value when used deliberately.

The core difference lies in purpose. An XML sitemap is a technical document for crawlers: it lists URLs and helps bots discover pages faster. An HTML sitemap is a page for people. It shows site structure in a navigable format and gives visitors a clear entry point into deeper content.

Where HTML sitemaps actually work

According to Google, the benefits show up in several scenarios:

  • Large sites with deeply nested pages where some content is poorly linked internally.
  • Resources with many categories and sections that are hard for users to navigate.
  • Sites that need stronger internal linking and better link equity distribution.
  • Projects focused on user experience and reducing bounce rates.

Google stresses that an HTML sitemap does not replace an XML sitemap and does not guarantee indexing. Its job is to aid navigation, not to duplicate technical functions.

What this means for affiliates and media buyers

For teams working with traffic, the takeaway is simple. If you run landing pages, multi-page prelanders, or a blog with dozens of articles, a clean HTML sitemap can improve behavioral metrics: users find what they need faster, session depth grows, and bounce rates drop. This indirectly affects traffic quality and, as a result, conversion.

It is also worth remembering that an HTML sitemap is a convenient way to show search engines the logic of your structure through internal links. If some pages are poorly connected, adding them to the map may speed up recrawling.

Editorial take

HTML sitemaps should not be treated as a relic or a mandatory element. They are a situational tool. They make sense on large, complex resources where navigation and internal linking require attention. For small sites with a simple structure, the benefit will be minimal, and in some cases such a page only creates duplicate content and extra entry points.

Practical advice: before adding an HTML sitemap, assess whether you actually have a navigation or internal linking problem. If yes, the tool helps. If not, do not spend resources on it. Google merely reminded us that HTML sitemaps remain a valid option, but the decision is always yours.
