Robinhood Blames Infrastructure, but Experts Point to Undercapitalization

Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev has stated that the GameStop situation was a 'wake-up call for the industry' and has pushed the company to accelerate the adoption of tokenization technology. According to Tenev, this will help improve the efficiency and scalability of trading platforms in the future.

However, experts unanimously agree that Robinhood's problem lay in the undercapitalization of the company, not in the imperfection of the infrastructure. The sharp increase in trading activity due to 'meme' stocks like GameStop led to Robinhood simply not having enough funds to support all the transactions. As a result, Robinhood was forced to restrict the purchase of such stocks, which caused outrage among users and triggered regulatory investigations.

The introduction of tokenization, according to Tenev, will allow Robinhood and other platforms to better cope with sudden surges in trading activity in the future. Digital assets provide more opportunities for rapid settlement and accounting of transactions, as well as simplify the clearing process.

Experts Recommend Focusing on Capitalization

Despite Tenev's optimism, most experts agree that Robinhood's main problem was a lack of its own capital, not the imperfection of the infrastructure. In their opinion, instead of transitioning to tokenization technology, the company should focus on increasing its own capitalization level to be prepared for sharp market fluctuations.

Overall, the GameStop situation has shown the vulnerability of platforms like Robinhood to unexpected spikes in trading activity. The introduction of tokenization may help partially solve this problem, but the availability of sufficient proprietary funds for the smooth execution of all necessary transactions remains fundamentally important.
