Tightening regulation of tokenized stocks

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has issued new rules governing the trading of tokenized stocks on cryptocurrency platforms. According to the regulator's statement, legal issuance of tokens directly representing shares of public companies requires the approval of the issuer.

The SEC believes that many so-called tokenized stocks sold to retail investors actually only provide indirect or synthetic ownership of the underlying securities. Thus, the regulator intends to tighten control over this segment of the cryptocurrency market, which previously existed in a regulatory gray area.

Such measures are related to the SEC's overall strengthening of oversight over the crypto industry in recent years. The regulator seeks to protect retail investors from the risks associated with the lack of transparency and high volatility of many crypto assets.

Expert opinion

The SEC's new rules represent an important step towards regulating the market for tokenized securities. Previously, many platforms offered retail traders a wide range of such instruments without proper regulatory control.

On the one hand, the tokenization of shares opens up new investment opportunities and increases the liquidity of traditional financial assets. However, as the SEC rightly notes, most existing solutions do not provide full ownership rights to the underlying securities.

Thus, tightening the requirements for issuers and platforms trading tokenized stocks will protect the interests of retail investors and ensure greater transparency in this market segment. In the long run, this will contribute to the development of legal and regulated solutions for the tokenization of traditional financial assets.
