Moving away from reliance on multisig bridges
In a recent speech, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin emphasized the need for Layer 2 solutions to move away from reliance on multisig bridges, which continue to be security bottlenecks. Instead, he called for greater adoption of Ethereum-native rollup protocols that can directly inherit the security advantages of the mainnet.
According to Buterin, many Layer 2 solutions have so far failed to fully decentralize and remain heavily dependent on multisig bridges, which represent security vulnerabilities. This undermines Ethereum's original goals of increasing the network's scalability without compromising its decentralization and resilience.
The need for native solutions
Buterin expressed concern that some Layer 2 projects are striving for too much autonomy, drifting away from Ethereum and its ecosystem. Instead, he called for greater adoption of Ethereum-native rollup protocols that can directly inherit the security advantages of the mainnet.
In the expert's opinion, this will allow Ethereum to fully realize its scaling potential without compromising the key principles embedded in its architecture - decentralization and resilience.
