Plunge in Bitcoin hashrate due to US winter storm
Bitcoin network data showed a sharp decline in the overall cryptocurrency hashrate, which was caused by massive power outages amid the winter storm that hit the United States.
According to the Hashrate Index analytics platform, the US currently holds a leading position in contributing to the global Bitcoin hashrate - about 38% of the computing power of the entire network. Therefore, power outages in several regions of the country due to worsening weather conditions directly affected the overall network performance.
Many large mining companies, such as Core Scientific, Riot Blockchain and Marathon Digital, were forced to suspend part of their capacities due to emergency power outages. This led to a tangible drop in the Bitcoin hashrate, which, according to Hashrate Index estimates, fell by almost 40% from the record levels reached in November 2022.
Such temporary declines in the computing power of the BTC network are not uncommon and occur from time to time, but their impact on the cryptocurrency's exchange rate and stability is usually mitigated within a few days as miners resume normal operations.
Nevertheless, such events clearly demonstrate how vulnerable Bitcoin's infrastructure is to external factors, including natural disasters. This may become the subject of discussions about the need for greater diversification of mining capacities and increased fault tolerance of the entire cryptocurrency ecosystem.
