Email marketing's history as a model for AI governance

Attribution, accuracy and authenticity from email marketing can form the basis for responsible AI use and brand credibility protection in traffic arbitrage.

What email marketing teaches us about AI governance

As the industry scrambles to define rules for generative AI, it pays to look back at the path email marketing has taken over the past two decades. This discipline was the first to face mass spam, unreliable data and a trust crisis — and it developed working mechanisms to protect sender reputation.

According to MarTech, three email-era principles can underpin a responsible AI approach: precise source attribution, accuracy verification and preserving brand authenticity.

Three principles that work for AI too

Attribution in email marketing long solved the task of identifying traffic sources and user actions. In AI content, this translates into the need to disclose whether text or images were model-generated, what data was used for training and who is responsible for publication.

Accuracy in email means database verification and bot protection. For AI, this means filtering hallucinations, fact-checking and banning auto-publishing without editorial control.

Authenticity in email is domain reputation, DKIM/SPF, honest subject lines. In the AI context, it means transparency about generative tools, no disguising AI as human authorship and respect for the user.

Why this matters for traffic arbitrage

Media buyers and performance marketers already use AI to generate creatives, landing pages and ad copy. Without a clear attribution and labeling policy for AI content, the risk grows of ad platform bans, audience trust loss and regulatory sanctions — especially as Google Ads and Facebook tighten rules on AI content.

In Russia and CIS the situation is further complicated by ad labeling requirements and the absence of unified standards. Those who implement internal AI attribution protocols now will gain an advantage during the next wave of regulation.

Editorial take

We believe email marketing is not a random example but a convenient sandbox where all the mistakes have already been made. Arbitrage teams and digital marketers should not reinvent AI policy from scratch, but copy proven mechanics: label generative content, audit data and keep a human in the loop. This will not slow work down, but it will protect against bans and reputational losses as rules tighten.
