Vitalik's call for L2 specialization

Last week, Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin criticized current Ethereum second-layer (L2) scaling models. In Vitalik's view, L2 protocols should not try to be 'Ethereum but cheaper', but instead should specialize in certain use cases or functionalities.

This approach, according to Buterin, will be more effective in achieving Ethereum network scalability than attempts to create universal L2 solutions that try to replicate the entire functionality of the main network.

L2 builders' response

Leading teams working on Ethereum L2 protocols responded to Vitalik's comments. Jesse Pollak, the head of Base (Coinbase's L2 project), agreed with Buterin's position, noting that L2 solutions should not try to be cheap clones of Ethereum.

'L2s can't just be 'Ethereum but cheaper'. We need to create something truly new and innovative,' Pollak said.

Representatives of Arbitrum and Optimism also supported the idea of specialization. In their opinion, each L2 protocol should focus on solving specific problems and providing unique capabilities, rather than trying to compete with Ethereum on all fronts.

Expert opinion

Vitalik Buterin's call for L2 solution specialization seems logical and well-founded. Attempts to copy Ethereum's functionality lead to many L2 protocols becoming redundant and not offering enough value to users. Instead, developers should focus on solving specific ecosystem problems, whether it's scaling DeFi applications, processing NFT transactions, or something else. This approach will allow L2 solutions to become more in-demand and carve out their own niche in the Ethereum ecosystem development.
