Regulator deemed Coinbase ad 'irresponsible'
The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned the use of Coinbase's musical advertising video, considering it 'irresponsible' and 'trivializing' the risks of investing in cryptocurrencies.
This ad, which had already been banned from television, depicted the decline of the UK, encouraging viewers to invest in cryptocurrencies. The regulator found that this approach 'downplays' the dangers of this market and does not provide enough information about investment risks.
This decision is part of a general trend in the UK to tighten regulation of cryptocurrency product advertising. For example, last year the ASA also banned another Coinbase ad for 'misleading' claims. The regulator seeks to protect inexperienced investors from overly optimistic and insufficiently informative marketing campaigns of cryptocurrency companies.
Expert opinion
I believe that this decision of the British regulator is absolutely justified. In the conditions of high volatility and lack of transparency of the cryptocurrency market, advertising that downplays the risks can be very dangerous, especially for inexperienced retail investors. Strict control of advertising for cryptocurrency products is extremely important for consumer protection.
I believe that in Russia, it is also necessary to strengthen oversight of the marketing of cryptocurrencies and other high-risk financial instruments. Increased attention from regulators to this area will help avoid misleading investors and reduce the likelihood of financial losses.
